A New Logo and Internet Home
The success of Cheviot Publishing and the high visibility of its titles required a stronger on-line presence and, in 2006, we redesigned our logo.

Together with design consultant Jörg Masche, Cheviot owners Elmari Swart and Jaap Scholten sat down for a creative brainstorm session, "We wanted to create a strong visual presence that could also communicate our boldness in bringing true local knowledge to our readers".

Careful market research showed that most competitors were using symbols representing various printing processes and thus Cheviot required something exceptional. Designer Jörg explains: "We decided to break the mould by not using traditional publishing imagery. Striping away all references to pens, printers, paper, books, anything to do with publishing, the name Cheviot stood out".

Elmari elaborates: "As we recounted how the name "Cheviot Publishing" came about, we realised the famous sheep breed by the same name offered the perfect logo. The Cheviot sheep breed has been a favourite of farmers on the hills forming the border between England and Scotland since the mid-1300's. It is a very alert and lively sheep and produces excellent meat and wool". Inspired by this fascinating history and the obvious connection in terms of quality and endurance, Jörg set off to weave his magic design wand.

It was not long before the new logo took shape. Jörg placed a white line-drawing of a ram's head on a square block, the ram's head also representing the letter "C" of the company's name. The two edges bleeding off the block symbolises the company's ability to break the mould and the impressive horn denotes the power of the written word. In keeping with the owners' vibrant characters and love of life, the ram's eye has a slight wink. The letters of the company name is written in an easily readable font representing a strong yet playful handwriting — perfectly signifying both the meticulous attention to detail Cheviot Publishing has for its work as well as the sheer pleasure these hedonistic entrepreneurs find in exploring new horizons.

Another significant growth period in 2008 lead to the development of Cheviot's Custom Publishing division. The custom publishing division sources suitable manuscripts from clients for production, printing and publishing on additional themes. The response to custom publishing was overwhelming and another new, interactive website was required to give current and prospective clients a full view on our portfolio of published titles and services.
